Jacque Foesier and Jeanne Ambler met in 1957 at the Betty Oliphant School of Ballet located at 444 Sherburne Street. Both dedicated teachers, sharing their love and passion for the art of dance throughout many communities within the GTA. Jeanne originally from England began her teaching career in Toronto in 1955 as an assistant to Miss 'O' who was also Ballet Mistress for The National Ballet Company. In 1959 Betty's School was sold to The Catholic School Board, and Miss 'O' was appointed Artistic Director for the new National Ballet School where her students were being absorbed. Jeanne and Jacque were married in 1961 and soon became a very strong and influential teaching partnership. In 1971 their fifth child was born. Melissa their oldest daughter inherited her parent’s passion, continuing her studies under their guidance, later entering the teachers training program at NBS. She graduated with honours, having completed a Licentiate degree as a certified teacher of Classical Ballet (Cecchetti Method). The family passion for dance appeared to skip over the next three children, although talented, and landed on the fifth child. Matthew was accepted into the full time professional program at NBS, in grade seven, he graduated in 1989. He then continued post graduate studies in both teacher and professional training at The National Ballet School, The Quinte School of Ballet and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet. In 2001 the Foesiers opened The Dance Place, a not for profit school of dance dedicated to enriching the lives of everyone who enters the school, regardless of race colour or creed,. The school has a strong mandate to provide opportunities for emerging artists, teachers and choreographers making the art of dance accessible to everyone who wishes to experience the joy and healthy benefits of this active life style. The Dance Place continues to expand its programs beyond Classical Ballet and includes a full curriculum of Modern, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Acro and Musical Theatre. There is also a strong winning competitive program for dance students who wish to meet the challenges this more intensive training has to offer. More recently a company of young dancers has developed promoting emerging artists in performance embracing new innovative choreography. The Dance Place an exceptional school has grown from very deep roots, founded by Jacque and Jeanne Foesier, dedicated, passionate teachers, serving the Toronto area since 1958.
